Lucky for Life is a multi-state lottery played across 23 states which offers prizes that are paid out over a long period of time rather than as a cash lump sum. The top prize offered is $1,000 every day for life. The second-tier prize is also substantial, offering $25,000 a year for life. Draws are held every day at approximately 10:35 PM ET.
Lucky for Life was launched in March 2012 in Connecticut and, over the years, more states joined. The participating states are Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Washington D.C., Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming.
The Ohio Lottery joined Lucky for Life in 2015 and the tickets went on sale on November 15, 2015.
This game has 10 prize tiers but the first two offer “for life” winnings. This is one of the main reasons why annuity-style lotteries like this one are so popular. You need to match all five main numbers and the Lucky Ball to win the first prize. The second prize can be yours if you match just the five main numbers. These prizes also have cash alternatives.
Across the world, there are many similar lotteries which pay out their jackpots this way such as Set for Life in the UK and Australia, EuroDreams across eight participating countries, Cash 4 Life in certain U.S. states, and Daily Grand in Canada.
